Which layout should I use?
Single staves is the standard 5-line staff, one per system, well suited to melody lines, lead sheets, choral parts, or any single-instrument sketch. Grand staff prints two staves per system joined by a bracket and a shared barline — the layout pianists, keyboardists, and composers use for treble and bass clef together. Guitar tab swaps the 5-line staff for 6 lines, one per string, for writing our fretted-instrument tablature by hand — pair it with standard staff paper if you also want notation above the tab.
Choosing a staff line spacing
Smaller spacing (around 6.5 mm) fits more systems on a page and suits musicians who write dense, detailed scores. Standard spacing (7.5 mm) is a comfortable general-purpose size close to most published manuscript books. Larger spacing (9 mm and up) gives young students, beginners, or anyone notating by hand with a thicker pencil more room between the lines and above/below the staff for ledger lines, dynamics, and lyrics.
